I Do. Not.

24 Oct

This essay is about how this woman doesn’t believe in monogamy which is when you are married to one man (or woman) for all of your life.  She list several reasons as too why she believes that marriage is not the right choice. This includes’ because marriage is about handing the woman off, like a baton, from her father to her husband she calls this the “traffic in women”’.  She says how it’s like the trade of property but that’s not true it’s not the change of property. It’s not like oh here is this book it’s yours now no it’s the care and protection of this woman is in your hands now. Her second point is ‘because the religious right and their defense of marriage act use marriage as a vehicle for homophobic legislation’. This isn’t true she only feels this way because she went through a bisexual phase, and the truth is yes it is illegal for gays to marry. But even if you have gay friends as long as you love the person you’re with why not get married unless you’re afraid of commitment. This covers her third point she could have ended up with a woman because she was with a few but the thing with that is she was just experimenting.  Her fourth point is she doesn’t believe in monogamy even though she has been with the same man for 7 years and has a child with him and that’s pretty much a monogamist relationship. They aren’t married but they might as well be. Her fifth point is that she will not be possessed but that isn’t what marriage is about. Marriage is a promise to love and care for each other until death do you part.  She says not being married means we get to keep choosing each other but honestly that just makes separating easier it was never official or legal. Her seventh point is that ‘because they have a kid together’ and she says that they will be in each other’s life’s forever so who needs marriage?  Then she says that they already have rings as a sign of commitment to each other. If you already have kids together, you have been together for at least seven year and you have rings then why not get married I mean come on be realistic. I obviously disagree.

Do you believe in monogamy? Why?

Why do you think she doesn’t other than her reasons that she listed? Do you agree with her?

People Like Us

The United States is called the melting pot and it is said that we are a very diverse nation. That is not completely true because while it is true that we have people from many different nations living here but we segregate ourselves. Even if we don’t do it on purpose we do it just out of habit. If you were to look at your group of friends how similar are they to you? To each other? We separate ourselves based on many things like Religion, politics, race, money and the list goes on and on.  If you looked at my friends you would see for the most part girls that are Christian, republican, and of course college students. Now while I am not saying that all my friends fit exactly into that little bubble but most of them do. That’s not saying all my friends are college students, go to church on Sunday, or are planning to vote for Mitt Romney in the upcoming election. Now while it does apply to most of them we don’t agree on everything. But it goes to show that even I am guilty of putting myself with similar people to myself.

Do you do the same?

How do you separate yourself from others?

Fifteen years on the Bottom rung

18 Oct

I think the story is sad but there has to be some way for them to become legal. 50 years ago immigrants from Europe came in everyday and took a test. So why not try to learn English and pass the test and become a citizen. Sure it seems easy to me because I am already a citizen and my natural language is English. I still think there should be a way to fix it so that the path isn’t so bad or to make it where they actually want to stay in their own country.

How do you think you would handle it if it was you in the same situation as Peralta?

Why do you think they go through all this work to get what comes so easily to us?

How to Choose a Career That Will Not Get You Rich No Matter What Anyone Tells You

17 Oct

The title sounds kind of harsh but I think the basic meaning is that usually the career you would love to have will not make you rich. He list several examples of careers as well as crack a few jokes that are a tad corny but funny.

What do you want to do with your major?

Is it for the love of the career or just for the money?

Two cheers for Materialism

15 Oct

Materialism is big in America. We always want more; even if we can’t afford it we still want it. Some people are even willing to go in to debt trying to get it. Materialism isn’t always a bad thing it’s good for the economy. The reason we spend so much is because we are in the pursuit of happiness. It I also said that money can’t buy happiness. Well people certainly die trying to get it.

Do you fall into the trap of materialism?

Do you think materialism is  necessarily a bad thing?

“introduction” from Bright- Sided

10 Oct

It’s true if you smile even when you are not feeling your best it will make you feel better because other people will smile back and that makes you feel good. Another thing I have learned is even if you have the right to be sad about something that happened smile and tell the people that made it happen that you feel great! Not only will it not let them see you down but if you say it enough you will start to believe it. Now as far as nationalism and patriotism I think it’s important to love the country you live in because if not you won’t be happy and you might as well move to another country.

Do you think smiling can brighten your day? Do you think it will brighten another person’s day?

Do you feel patriotic towards your country?

They eat what we are

1 Oct

It starts out a little nasty talking about the digestion of animals. As it went on it started on how our diets have affected theirs. How we try to shape them in our image.  Like as we try to stay fit and not be overweight we want the same for them so we get them healthier diets too. Some of the test they used to find better foods and diets for animals are very sad. Why should a dog or cat have to die for you to learn how to save other dogs and cats?

Why do we choose the foods for our pets that we do?

How does your diet affect what you feed your pet?

Food inc.

29 Sep

In the documentary they talk about how the food we eat is bad for us and that we get it because its cheap. They back it up using statistics. 1 in 3 Americans born after 2000 will contract early on set diabetes. Which can be classified as a piece of emotional evidence because not only does it scare you that kids that are twelve years old or younger could get diabetes.  which is pretty sad as well that little ones would have to deal with that.

Add Cake, Subtract self esteem

21 Sep

This really is a problem in this nation because not only do I know exactly what she is talking about. I am guilty of criticizing not only myself and what I am eating. Also I criticize others and what they are eating. I do both of these things without thinking its a habit a  reflex that it just comes out without me stopping it. All these pictures of girls that are celebrities and models ridiculously skinny and I like many others say I wanna look that good. Its just not right or healthy.

How would you feel having to look at food that you want so bad but know you shouldn’t eat?

Do you plan your food schedule for the day? like if i eat this at this time then i can have that at that time.

The ultimate in local eating

15 Sep

It was definitely interesting the fact that you can find food everywhere. Foraging definitely sounds interesting not that I would do it because I would be the one that picked the poisonous plant and eat it before someone could tell me not to. I like it better when I can just go to the store and pick it up, because in my day to day life I wouldn’t have the time to learn what is safe. Let alone go out and find it.

Would you forage for food?

Is this a plausible way to get food?
